How vampire names are built
¶Vampire naming follows the old Central and Eastern European pattern, because that is where the surviving lines were made. A personal name is dithematic: two Slavic elements welded together, the first carrying the quality and the second the standing. Vlad is rule, mir is world, slav is glory, drag is precious, bor is battle. Vladimir, Dragoslav and Borislav are built exactly this way, and a vampire keeps the structure long after the language around it has changed.
The second half of the name is where region shows. Romanian lines take the descendant suffixes escu and eanu, so a founder called Vlad produces the house Vladescu. Slavic lines take vich, ov, ev and ski, all meaning son of or belonging to.
