How dragon names are built
¶A dragon's name is a sentence compressed into two elements, and both halves are grand nouns rather than adjectives. The opening element states the dragon's nature — morvax death, pyrax pyre, kryx frost, vorax devourer, nyxar the void — and the closing element states its standing or its weapon: nax a tyrant, saur a serpent, thryx a horn, koth an abyss, vaul a hoard. Voraxnax parses instantly as devourer-tyrant, and dragons expect it to be parsed.
The phonetics are built for volume. Dragon speech favours the sibilants s, x and z, the fricatives th and v, and long stressed vowels, and it avoids the soft nasals that make a name pleasant. Names run three to five syllables because a wyrm has the breath for it and because length is a status claim. Stress falls on the first syllable of each element, giving the characteristic two-beat roll of MOR-vax-SAU-rion that mortals find difficult to reproduce.
Beside the true name sits a use-name: a descriptive title in whatever mortal tongue is local, of the pattern Ashen Maw or Nightscale Wrath. Dragons tolerate these because the true name is never given away, and in most traditions knowing it is understood to give leverage. A hatchling's true name is short and gains elements with each age category, so the length of a dragon's name is a reliable indication of how old and how dangerous it is.
Questions
What are good dragon names?
The best ones are long, front-stressed and built from two meaningful halves, so the name states what the dragon is: Pyraxthryx, Morvaxsaur, Kryxkoth. Choose the first element for temperament or element and the second for role — tyrant, serpent, hoard, abyss — and the result will sound ancient rather than randomly assembled.
Are dragon names male or female?
Dragons distinguish them, though the difference is phonetic rather than grammatical. Masculine true names close hard on consonants such as x, th and r; feminine names carry a flowing element ending in a vowel, giving forms like Saphyra and Velyra before the second element attaches. The neutral set is used for elder wyrms and for dragons who have outlived the distinction.
How long should a dragon name be?
Three to five syllables for an adult, and more for an ancient. Short names read as young or as lesser drakes, which is a useful signal at the table. If a name is becoming unpronounceable, keep the full form for formal scenes and give the mortals in your story a shortened use-name, which is exactly what happens in most settings.
What are dragon titles or epithets?
Titles are descriptive names given by the people who live near the dragon, formed as colour or element plus a body part or possession: the Ashen Maw, Nightscale, the Ember Hoard. They are how a dragon is known publicly, and they are safe to speak aloud where a true name is not, which is why chronicles almost always record the title instead.
