How orcish names are built

Etymology

Orcish names are short, back-of-the-throat and almost always about a body, a weapon or a job. The first element is the thing — bruk bone, grish blood, morg death, nakh flesh, zarg a scar — and the second is what happens to it or with it: gash a wound, rak a rip, kul a skull, thrag a beast, urk a slave. Grishgash is blood-wound. Nobody in a warband needs the name explained.

The sound system is deliberately narrow. Orcish uses g, k, z, r and the clusters gr, kr, thr and sn, closes hard on stops, and has no long vowels and no soft endings. Because first elements end on consonants, second elements can start on a vowel without a seam, which is why so many names run Zog-ak, Muk-ur, Nug-uz. Anything that ends in a vowel gets clipped in the field, so a name is already at its shortest usable form.

There are no inherited surnames. What follows a personal name is a clan epithet — Skullcrusher, Bonebiter, Rotmaw, Ashgrinder — and it belongs to whoever holds the position, not the bloodline. Killing the holder takes the epithet with the office. That is why orcs will introduce themselves with the epithet first and the given name second when they are among strangers: the epithet is the part that carries standing, and the given name is only what their mother shouted.

Questions

FAQ

What are good orc last names?

Orcs use clan epithets rather than family surnames, so build a compound of a body part or material plus a violent verb-noun: Skullcrusher, Bonebiter, Gutripper, Ashgrinder, Rotmaw. Because the epithet attaches to a role and not a bloodline, you can change it mid-campaign when your character wins or loses standing, which most tables find more useful than a fixed surname.

Are orc names male or female?

Both, with a clear phonetic split. Masculine orc names end hard on consonants, usually a stop: Zograk, Muknak, Grishgash. Feminine names take an open ending on the first element, giving Draka, Gruma, Naxra before the second element attaches. The vocabulary of meanings is identical, because orcish culture does not soften a name for anyone.

Why are orc names so short?

Because they have to survive being shouted across a battle line. Orcish drops unstressed syllables aggressively, so any name longer than three syllables is contracted within a season of use. If you want a longer, more formal orc name, put the length in the epithet and keep the given name to two syllables, which is how a chieftain's full title actually works.

Can I use these orc names in a game or story?

Yes. The syllable set here is original rather than borrowed from any published setting, so the names are free to use in tabletop campaigns, fiction and games. Each fragment carries a meaning, so you can pick a name that reflects a character's deed or role rather than choosing one purely on sound.
