How elven names are built
¶Elven names are compounds of exactly two elements, and almost every one resolves into image plus role. The first element carries the picture — ael noble, isil moon, lae water, gil bright, nae flame. The second names a thing or a station: dir a man, riel a crowned woman, las a leaf, thal a grove, hir a lord. Aelwyn is not decoration. It is noble friend, assembled the way any compound word is assembled, and an elf hears both halves.
Sound rules matter as much as meaning. Elvish tolerates long vowel runs and the liquid consonants l, n, r and th, and refuses two hard stops in sequence. That is why first elements end in vowels or in l, n and r, and why second elements almost always open on a consonant. Isil and thas give Isilthas, and the seam is smooth. When an elven name feels wrong it is usually because two stops have collided at the join.
House names work on a different principle. They are transparent descriptive compounds — Moonshadow, Silverbrook, Frostbough — recording a place, an office or an ancestor's deed rather than a personal quality, and they are never translated when elves speak to outsiders. A typical elf carries a birth-name from a parent, an inherited house name, and often a third name earned in adulthood that quietly replaces the first in daily use. An old character should have a birth-name nobody has used for centuries.
Questions
What are good elf last names?
Elven surnames are descriptive compounds rather than patronymics, so they pair a natural image with a role or feature: Moonwhisper, Silverbough, Frostglade, Dawnstrider. Pick the first half for the family's territory or emblem and the second half for what the line is known for, and the name will read as genuinely elven rather than assembled at random.
Are elf names male or female?
Both, and there is a third set that reads as neither. Masculine names lean on endings like dir, rion and thas; feminine names on riel, wen, lia and niel; neutral names use place and craft endings that carry no gender at all. The first elements are shared across all three, which is why siblings often echo each other.
How long should an elf name be?
Two to four syllables for the personal name is the sweet spot. Anything longer starts to feel like a title rather than something a friend would say across a table. If you want grandeur, put the length into the house name instead and keep the given name short, which is how most elven courts actually handle it.
Can I use these names in my D&D game or novel?
Yes. Every syllable here is original and built from an invented element system rather than lifted from any published setting, so the names are yours to use in campaigns, fiction or games without attribution. The meanings are included so you can justify a name in-world or build a family whose names all share one root.
