How dwarven names are built

Etymology

Dwarven names are stacked, not flowing. Each is a closed first element bolted to a closed second element, and both are nouns you could carve into a lintel: bal fire, kar rock, urd fate, gor blood, joined to bar a beard, rik a ruler, thur endurance, grim a helm. Balgrim is fire-helm. The join is meant to be audible as two blocks meeting, which is why the language favours k, g, r, d, th and the clustered starts br, gr, kr and thr.

Vowels are short and never doubled, and no element ends in a bare vowel. That single rule produces the whole sound of the language: because first elements close on a consonant, second elements can open on a vowel without any awkwardness, giving forms like Bal-ak, Dur-und and Thor-ur alongside the heavier Kraggrim and Skalmund. Dwarven parents test a name aloud against a hammer stroke. If it will not fit two beats, it goes back.

Clan names are separate and older than any living dwarf. They are literal compounds recording the seam the family works, the oath it swore or the tool it is known for — Ironbeard, Deepdelver, Emberforge, Oathwarden — and they change only when a hold is lost. Beside the clan name sits an earned epithet, granted after a deed and used by anyone with the standing to use it. A dwarf introduced with all three is being formally presented, not greeted.

Questions

FAQ

What are good dwarf clan names?

The strongest dwarven clan names are literal: a material or place plus a trade or body part. Ironbeard, Stonehelm, Deepdelver, Emberforge and Oathwarden all say what the family does or swore. Avoid abstractions. A clan name should be something you could point at inside a mine, because historically that is exactly where it came from.

Do dwarf women have different names?

Yes, though the roots are shared. Feminine dwarven names take an open ending — Bera, Halla, Runa, Sigr — and pair with second elements like brid, dris, gunda and veig, while masculine names close hard on consonants. Clan names are identical for everyone in the family, so only the given name signals gender.

Why do dwarf names sound Norse?

Because the phonetics overlap: short vowels, heavy consonant clusters, compound structure and a fondness for kennings. Old Norse names such as Thorgrim or Hildisif are literally two nouns bolted together, which is the same machine this generator runs. The elements here are original, but the assembly rule is the historical one, which is why the results feel authentic.

How do dwarves earn epithets?

An epithet marks a specific deed and is granted by the hold, not chosen. It sits after the clan name and describes what happened: the one who held a gate, opened a seam or survived a collapse. In play, this is the most useful part of a dwarf's name, because it gives the table a story hook in two words.
