How werewolf names are built

Etymology

Werewolf naming runs on Norse and Germanic roots because that is where the old wolf vocabulary sits. Ulf is wolf, ylva is she-wolf, varg is the outlaw wolf a man becomes when the law casts him out, and od is the battle frenzy that takes him. Stack those against a second element and the name states a condition rather than decorating one: Ulfgrim, Ylvahowl, Vargblood. Short, stressed, consonant-heavy — nothing about the sound should be smooth.

The second half decides what kind of wolf you are. Body words are the plainest and the oldest: fang, claw, jaw, pelt, hide, sinew, marrow. Motion words mark hunters: prowl, stalk, chase, stride, track. Weather and lunar words mark the change itself: storm, rime, gloam, nid for the dark of the moon. Feminine forms keep the Norse endings that already existed — dis a lady, hild a shieldmaiden, run a secret, veig strength, bjorg protection — so Ylvadis and Karahild need no invention.

Most werewolves carry two names and use them in different rooms. A human name for daylight, and a pack name earned in the wild that describes what happened when the moon turned: Bloodwalker, Moonchaser, Frostbane. Pack names use the same compounding as the personal name but attach to the group rather than the family, so littermates share the tail and a lone wolf loses it. Give an exiled character the human name only and the absence does the work.

Questions

FAQ

What are good werewolf names?

Ones that sound rough in the mouth. Two heavy syllables, hard consonants, and a meaning that says something about the beast rather than the person: hunger, frenzy, dark moon, outlaw. Norse and Old Germanic roots do this naturally, which is why ulf, varg and grim show up in werewolf fiction far more often than Latin or Romance words.

What is a female werewolf called?

Old Norse already had the word: ylva, the she-wolf, feminine counterpart to ulfr. Bera is the she-bear on the same pattern. For names, feminine forms take endings that existed in the language — dis for a lady, hild for a shieldmaiden, run for a secret, bjorg for protection — rather than softening a masculine name with a vowel.

How are werewolf pack names made?

The same way personal names are, but the compound describes the group's territory or reputation instead of an individual: Frostpack, Nightrun, Bonemoor, Ashenclaw. A pack name works as a surname that can be lost. Exiles, lone wolves and the newly bitten carry no pack element at all, which readers pick up without being told.

How are werewolf names different from vampire names?

Vampire naming leans aristocratic and Slavic or Latinate, with titles, long vowels and old family lines. Werewolf naming leans the other way: Norse and Germanic roots, single stressed syllables, body and weather words, and no titles. If a name would look right on a deed of land it belongs to a vampire, not a wolf.

Do werewolves have last names?

In most fiction they carry an ordinary human surname for their daylight life and a pack or epithet name for the other one. The epithet is earned rather than inherited, so it can change after a hunt, a challenge or an exile, which makes it a useful way to mark a turning point in a character's story.
