How dragonborn names are built
¶A dragonborn is introduced clan first and given name second, because the clan is the part that carries weight. It holds the hoard, answers for debts, and is what a disgraced dragonborn is stripped of. Personal names are deliberately small beside it: one struck root naming something of the body or the forge, akh flame, tak tooth, vash banner, bolted to a short ending naming a station. Ashkar is ember shield. Two beats and done.
The sound is built from single hard codas and consonant-initial endings, so the seam lands as one blow rather than a run of vowels. Roots close on k, kh, sh, th, z or r; endings open on a consonant and close on a stop. That is why a dragonborn name can be barked down a shield wall and a dragon's cannot. True draconic names run long and ornamented; their descendants clipped them into something that survives a battlefield.
Clan names go the other way and are grand on purpose: a root plus a two-syllable descriptor recording a founding act, an alliance sworn or a pass held. Kazathun is iron first flight. Vornokthar is vanguard shield wall. A clan name is never shortened, never translated for outsiders and never used casually. Many adults also keep a childhood name only close kin may say, which is why a dragonborn asked for a third name usually declines.
Questions
What are good dragonborn clan names?
Build them from a hard root and a two-syllable descriptor that records something the clan did: Ashkathun, Kravundar, Vornekthar, Zakhorrak. The clan name should be longer and more formal than the given name, because in dragonborn use it is the important half. Pick a root for the founder's element or emblem and a descriptor for the deed the line is remembered for.
Do dragonborn names come first or last?
Clan first in any formal setting: the clan name, then the given name, then an earned epithet if there is one. Friends and unit-mates use the given name alone, and outsiders who lead with it are politely tolerated rather than corrected. Writing the clan name second is a translation convention, not how a dragonborn would ever say it.
Are dragonborn names the same as dragon names?
No, and the difference is the point. Dragon names are long, ornamented and full of open vowels because a dragon has time. Dragonborn names are clipped to two beats with hard stops and sibilants, because they evolved to be shouted in armour. If a name takes more than a second to say, it reads as a dragon's name, not a dragonborn's.
Are dragonborn names gendered?
Only lightly. The roots are shared across all three sets here; the ending does the work. Masculine names take consonant endings that close on a stop, feminine names take endings that resolve on a light vowel, and the neutral set uses office and law endings that carry no gender at all. Siblings often share a root deliberately.
Can I use these names in my campaign or novel?
Yes. The element system here is original and assembled for this generator rather than lifted from any published setting, so the names are free to use in games, fiction or anything else without attribution. Each syllable ships with its meaning, so you can justify a name in play or build a whole clan whose members share one root.
