How tiefling names are built
¶Tiefling naming runs on two layers, and using both is what makes a name read as genuine. The first is inherited: an infernal given name, abstract and Latinate, built from a root naming a condition and an ending naming what becomes of it. Umbren is shadowed, oleth is undoing, and Umbrenoleth is the undoing of a shadowed thing. These names describe no face and no deed. They describe a term that was agreed long before the bearer was born.
The infernal layer is deliberately smooth. It has no guttural clusters and no bitten-off endings, because it was formalised in courts rather than shouted in pits. Roots end on a consonant, endings open on a vowel, and the seam disappears: Ferren plus imor gives Ferrenimor without a single hard stop. What it carries instead is melancholy — the vocabulary is loss, debt, memory, refusal and hour, and a name assembled from it sounds patient rather than violent.
The second layer is chosen, not given. Many tieflings replace the family name with a virtue name they select themselves, and the convention is a qualifier plus a quality: Ever Mending, Twice Given, Never Owed, Late Mercy, Only Quiet. They are said in the common tongue on purpose, so anyone can hear them. A tiefling who keeps only the infernal name is making a point about inheritance, and one who keeps only the virtue name is making the opposite point.
Questions
What are good tiefling virtue names?
Pair a qualifier with a quality and keep both in plain speech: Ever Mending, Twice Given, Never Owed, Softly Spoken, Last Reverence. The best ones read as a statement about the bearer rather than a decoration, which is why the qualifier matters as much as the virtue. Choose the quality first, then the word that complicates it.
Do tieflings have last names?
Some inherit a human family name from the mortal side of the line, some carry an infernal house word, and many replace both with a chosen virtue name in adulthood. This generator gives the virtue name, because it is the one that is specific to the tradition. Using an inherited infernal given name alongside a chosen virtue name is the most characteristic combination.
Should a tiefling name sound like a demon name?
No. Demon names are guttural and front-loaded with consonant clusters, and they stop dead. Infernal tiefling names are smooth, polysyllabic and vowel-linked, closer to an old court language than to anything shouted. If the name has three consonants in a row or ends on a hard stop, it has drifted into demon territory.
Are tiefling names gendered?
The roots are shared. Masculine names take endings that close on a consonant, feminine names take endings that resolve on a vowel, and the neutral set uses abstract nouns that carry no gender at all. Because the roots repeat across all three, siblings can be given names that visibly belong to the same line without matching in gender.
Can I use these names in my D&D game or novel?
Yes. The infernal element system and the virtue-name pairs are original to this generator rather than lifted from any published list, so they are free to use in campaigns, fiction and games without attribution. Every syllable carries its meaning, which makes it easy to justify a name in-world or to build a family whose names share one root.
