How paladin names are built
¶A paladin's name is a claim about conduct, and it is built to be read aloud in a hall. The first element is a virtue in the old liturgical tongue — vero true, fide faithful, lumi light, sancti holy, consta steadfast — and the second is a station or an instrument: mund protection, ric rule, gar spear, ward keeper, helm helm. Veromund is not a sound. It is true protection, and everyone in the room can parse it.
The two halves come from different mouths. Virtue elements are Latin, inherited from the liturgy that trained the order; station elements are Frankish, inherited from the warband that fed it. That seam is the history of the vocation compressed into one word. It also explains the cadence: three or four syllables, stress falling early, and a hard consonant at the end so the name lands like a struck shield when a herald announces it.
The epithet is where an order records what you actually did. Oathkeeper, Lightbearer, Vowbound, Ironheart — a descriptive compound that is granted rather than inherited, and revoked in the rare cases where it must be. Most sworn knights carry a given name from their family, a house name many set aside on taking vows, and an epithet earned in their first decade of service. Elders are usually known by the third alone.

What are good paladin names?
The ones that parse. Pick a virtue for the first half and a duty for the second, then say it out loud: Verohelm, Fidemund, Lumigard, Sanctaward. A paladin name should be pronounceable by a frightened villager on the first try, so keep it under four syllables and end it on a consonant that stops cleanly rather than trailing away.
What is a good paladin title or last name?
Use an epithet rather than a family name. Oathkeeper, Dawnbearer, Truebrand, Shieldsworn and Vigilhand all describe an act or a standing rather than a bloodline, which is how orders actually mark their members. If your character came from nobility, keep the house name as well and let the epithet sit after it — the contrast between inherited and earned is useful characterisation.
Do paladin names have to sound holy?
No, but they should sound formal. The register is oath-language, not prayer: words that would appear in a charter, a vow or a sentence of judgement. Steadfast, upright, watchful and lawful all work as first elements without invoking any deity, which suits a paladin sworn to an ideal, a crown or an ancestor rather than to a church.
How do I name a fallen paladin or oathbreaker?
Keep the name and break the epithet. A knight called Fidemund Oathkeeper who falls is far more chilling as Fidemund the Unkept than as anything newly sinister, because the original meaning is still legible and now reads as an accusation. Fallen paladins in most traditions are not renamed; they are simply stripped of the second name and referred to by the first.
