How sorcerer names are built

Etymology

A sorcerer is not named for what they studied, because they did not study. The name records the blood. The first element names the line — embr ember blood, aer the storm line, nyx night blood, draval wyrm blood, umbr shadow blood — and the second names how that inheritance has surfaced in this particular body: is glass eyes, thar thick veins, sil a light footfall, tyx clawed hands. Embris is glass eyes of the ember blood, and it is closer to a diagnosis than a compliment.

The second element is chosen after the mark shows, which is why sorcerers are so often renamed in adolescence. Families that have carried a line for generations keep a short list of marks and a shorter list of what each one has historically meant, and a child who develops an unlisted one is a problem the whole household discusses. The name is spoken in full by people who want to remind the sorcerer where the power came from, and shortened by everybody else.

There is no house name in the ordinary sense — a sorcerous line rarely holds property long enough. What follows the given name is a line-name: Emberheir, Stormtouched, Wyrmscion, Voidkin, Ashwake. It names the source and the relationship to it, and other people use it more than the sorcerer does. A character who introduces themselves with the line-name is either proud of it or making a threat, and both readings are usually available.

Questions

FAQ

What are good sorcerer names?

Ones that name the inheritance and the symptom. Pair a line-root with a mark: Embris, Aerthar, Nyxil, Solmoth, Ravnvyr. The name should sound slightly worn or warped rather than elegant, because the register is family shorthand rather than an academy title, and it should be sayable in one breath by somebody who is frightened.

How is a sorcerer name different from a wizard name?

A wizard name is a title claimed after training and it names a discipline. A sorcerer name is descriptive and imposed, and it names a bloodline plus its effect. Wizards accumulate names as they earn them; sorcerers are given one and mostly try to live around it. If your character chose their own name, they are probably a wizard whatever the sheet says.

What is a good sorcerer last name?

Use a line-name rather than a family name: Emberheir, Frostblood, Wyrmscion, Stormtouched, Ashwake, Voidkin. It says where the power came from and how close to the source this generation sits. Because sorcerous lines seldom hold land, the line-name is often the only inherited thing a sorcerer has, which makes it worth a scene at some point.

Should a sorcerer's name match their bloodline in D&D?

It helps enormously. Draconic bloodlines take wyrm and scale marks, wild magic takes flicker and stillness marks, shadow lines take marks about reflections and footfalls. Pick the first element from the origin on your sheet and the second from what the table will actually see happen, and the name does a piece of characterisation for free every time somebody says it.

Can I use these names in D&D or my own fiction?

Yes. The line-roots and marks here are invented for this generator rather than lifted from any published setting or character, so every name it produces is free to use. Take them for player characters, NPCs, novels or commercial modules with no attribution and no restriction.
