How merfolk names are built
¶A merfolk name is two elements long, and the first is always a state of water or light rather than a quality of the person. Aelis is foam, Talar is the current, Selar is moonlight on the surface, Cerul is the open blue. The second element gives the kinship or office: della a chorus, mara a keeper, riel a crown, aia a daughter. Coralisdella parses as coral chorus, and every mer hearing it knows which reef sings it.
The sound is chosen to be sung rather than spoken. Merfolk names run on liquids and long vowels, avoid stacked consonants entirely, and place stress on the second element so a name can be held on one long note. Feminine forms close open on a vowel, giving Amarisella and Nerithoria; masculine forms close on a sibilant or a liquid, giving Thalordaris and Pelagvaris. The neutral set belongs to the deep-water houses, whose names are longer because they are sung across greater distance.
The house name comes after, and it is a place joined to a practice: Coralsong, Pearlhaven, Tidechorus, Kelpweave. It records which reef, shoal or grotto a family tends and what work it does there, so it changes when a house moves and is dropped altogether by those who leave the shelf for open water. A mer is introduced with given name and house together, and a mer introduced by given name alone is understood to be either very young or deliberately anonymous.
Questions
What are good mermaid names?
The ones that sing. Take a water or light word for the opening element and a kinship or office word for the close, then check that the join has no consonant pile: Amarisella, Coralisdella, Selarnareth. If you can hold the name on a single breath without your tongue stopping, it is a good merfolk name; if you have to bite it off, rebuild it.
Are mermaid names different for mermen?
Yes, but the difference is only in the closing element. Both sexes take the same water and light openings, and both use the same house names. Feminine names end open on a vowel, so Thalis becomes Thalisoria; masculine names close on a liquid or a sibilant, giving Thalordaris. The neutral set is used by deep-water families who do not mark the distinction at all.
What are good mermaid last names?
House names, not family names. They pair a place with a practice: Coralsong, Pearlhaven, Kelpweave, Tidechorus, Nacrecourt. The first half names the reef, cove or shoal the house tends and the second names the work done there, so the name tells you both where a mer is from and what her family is known for.
What is the difference between a mermaid name and a siren name?
Register. Merfolk names describe water and kinship, and are meant to be pleasant to sing among your own people. Siren names describe the effect on a listener, so they lean on elements like Cyren, Sirel and Sirenal, meaning call and lure. If you want a siren, keep the flowing shape but choose an opening element that names what the voice does.
