How podcast names are built
¶Two shapes carry most of the medium. The first is a blunt two-noun compound where a concrete word meets a technical or abstract one: Gravel Theory, Ferry Report, Kettle Circuit. The concrete half gives the listener a picture, the abstract half tells them the show has a method. It is the same trick a good headline uses, and it survives being read in a list of two hundred other shows in a directory app.
The second is the ampersand pair, inherited from radio billing: a subject and the mess it makes. Coffee & Consequences, Rope & Regret, Sawdust & Slow Progress. The rule is that the second half must not be a synonym of the first — pairing two words from the same register produces something that sounds like a law firm. Pick the subject, then pick the thing that reliably goes wrong around it, and let the ampersand do the joke.
Then check it against the directory. Your show appears as small text under a square image, so front-load the distinctive word and keep the whole thing to three words or fewer. Leave the word podcast out of the title: it is redundant in a podcast app and wastes the characters that could carry your subject. Search the exact name in a couple of directories before you commit, and take the matching handle at the same time.
Questions
How do I name a podcast?
Start with the subject word a listener would search for, then add either a second noun that describes your treatment of it or an ampersand and the thing that goes wrong around it. Read the result aloud as if introducing an episode. If it needs explaining before it makes sense, it will not survive a directory listing next to two hundred other shows.
Should the word podcast be in my podcast name?
No. Inside a podcast app it tells a listener nothing, and it costs you characters that could be carrying your subject. It also makes the show harder to talk about, since nobody says the full name aloud. Keep the title to the subject and the angle, and let the description field do the explaining.
How long should a podcast name be?
Three words at most, and shorter is better. Directory listings truncate under the artwork, and long names get shortened by listeners anyway, usually to the first word. That means the first word has to be the distinctive one. If your title needs a subtitle, put it in the show description rather than stretching the name to carry it.
How do I check whether a podcast name is taken?
Search the exact phrase in two or three directories, since each indexes differently and a show can exist in one without appearing in another. Check the social handle and a domain at the same time. Names are not usually exclusive, but sharing one with an established show in your genre means permanently losing search traffic to it.
