How a horse name is built

Etymology

A thoroughbred name is a legal document as much as a name. Registries cap it at eighteen characters, spaces and punctuation included, and reject anything already carried by a horse still racing or at stud, anything held permanently by a champion, anything that reads as advertising or obscenity, and the name of a living person without written consent. That is why so many racing names look invented: the plain ones were claimed generations ago and never came back.

The best names are arguments about breeding. A foal is often named from the sire and the dam together, as a portmanteau or as a pun that only lands once you know the pedigree, so a colt by a stallion called Northern Light out of a mare called Evening Verse might run as Northern Verse. Reading a race card in a well-run yard means reading the parentage twice, once in the breeding line and once in the joke.

Every horse then ends up with two names. The registered name is the formal one, grand and usually two words. The barn name is what anyone in the yard actually says: one or two syllables pulled out of the registered name and softened, so a horse registered as Midnight Sonnet is Sonny by the second week. Show disciplines follow the same conventions, and a stud prefix works like a surname, marking which yard bred the animal.

Questions

FAQ

How long can a racehorse name be?

Eighteen characters, and spaces and punctuation count towards the total, so a two-word name has roughly sixteen letters to play with. Names cannot be made up entirely of numbers, cannot begin with a number, and cannot end in a word such as filly, colt, stud or stallion. Anything longer is returned for a rewrite before the horse can be entered.

What are the rules for naming a thoroughbred?

The name must be unique among horses currently racing or breeding, must not copy a name held permanently by a champion, must not be commercial or obscene, and must not use a living person's name without written permission. Registries also refuse initials, names that are only numbers, and anything too close to an existing name in sound or spelling.

How do I choose a barn name for my horse?

Take the registered name and cut it down to the syllable the horse actually answers to, usually one or two syllables ending in an open sound. Most yards land on it by accident within a fortnight. Keep it distinct from the other horses in the barn and from the words you use as commands, because a stable is a noisy place to be misheard in.

What makes a good show name?

Show names have room to be grand, because they are announced rather than shouted. Two words work best: a modifier that sets the tone and a noun that carries an image, so the announcer gets a rhythm and the crowd gets a picture. Keep the same eighteen-character discipline even where the discipline does not require it, since long names get clipped in the ring.

Can two horses have the same name?

Not at the same time in the same registry. A name is released only after the horse has stopped racing and breeding for a set number of years, which is why names cycle back into use decades later. Names attached to major winners are retired permanently, so the most famous ones are gone for good rather than merely unavailable.
