How ancient Egyptian names are built
¶An Egyptian name is usually a short sentence. Amenhotep is Amun is content, Thutmose is Thoth is born, Ptahhotep is Ptah is content, Nebamun is Amun is my lord. The first element names a god or a thing, the second says what it does, so a name is a statement of fact about the world rather than a label. Ordinary vocabulary works the same way: Ankh is life, Nefer good, Neb lord, Nakht strong, Wer great.
Theophoric names are the rule rather than a special case. A child could be named for Amun at Thebes, for Ptah at Memphis, for Neith at Sais, and the god in the name usually tells you where the family was. Feminine names take the ending -t or -et: Nefer becomes Nefret, Neb becomes Nebet, Sheps becomes Shepset. The gendered element is normally the last one, so the same first element serves a son or a daughter.
Egyptian script wrote consonants and not vowels, so every pronunciation here is a modern convention. Imn-htp is written Amenhotep because Egyptologists agreed to slot in an e; the Egyptians themselves said something we cannot recover. There were also no family names. A person was identified by parentage, usually the mother, in the formula born of, and by title, which is why the second name this generator gives you is an office rather than a surname.
Questions
Did ancient Egyptians have last names?
No. There was no inherited family name at any period. A person was distinguished by a title and by filiation, written as born of followed by the mother's name on stelae and coffins. Rich families reused the same personal names across generations instead, which is why an Egyptologist reading a tomb often has three Amenemhats to tell apart.
What does -hotep mean at the end of a name?
Hotep means peace, contentment or an offering. In a name it works as a verb: Amenhotep is Amun is content, Ptahhotep is Ptah is content. The same word labels the offering table in a tomb and the standard funerary formula, hotep di nesu, an offering which the king gives.
What does Ankh mean in a name?
Ankh means life, and it is the word the looped cross hieroglyph writes. As a first element it means the living one, as in Ankhesenamun, she lives for Amun. As a verb at the end of a name it means simply lives. It is one of the most common elements in the whole Egyptian onomastic stock.
What are real ancient Egyptian names?
Amenhotep, Thutmose, Ramose, Hatshepsut, Nefertiti, Ankhesenamun, Merneith, Senenmut and Imhotep are all attested. Each is built from the elements in this generator, so combinations you produce here are formed the same way even when the exact name is not one that has survived on a monument.
Are Egyptian gods' names really used in personal names?
Constantly. Amun, Ra, Ptah, Thoth, Horus, Isis and Hathor all appear inside ordinary people's names, and the practice was normal piety rather than presumption. The god is the subject of the sentence the name makes, so Ramose says the sun god is born, not that the bearer is a god.
